How often should you get a trim?

Hair grows around a centimetre a month. On a long style you’ll barely see that. On a skin fade, one centimetre is the whole haircut, which is why the answer depends on what you’re wearing.

A rough guide

  • Skin fades: every two to three weeks.
  • Short back and sides: every three to four weeks.
  • Tapers and textured crops: every four to five weeks.
  • Longer scissor cuts: every six to eight weeks.
  • Growing it out: every eight weeks, to keep the shape as it comes through.

Signs you’re due

Your hair needs more product than usual to sit right, your ears start to disappear, or the back of your neck looks fuzzy in photos. The neckline usually goes first, which is why some clients come in for a quick tidy between cuts.

Make it easy on yourself

The easiest way to keep a cut looking good is to book your next one before you leave. You’ll get the barber and time you want, and it’s easy to move if your plans change. Ask for the same slot and it soon becomes a habit.
